Green Eggs and Ham is the second Dr. Seuss interactive Living Books video game released on July 26, 1996. It is based on the 1960 book of the same name.

Plot[]

Sam-I-Am tries to pester Guy (Sam's Friend) by saying "I am Sam!" and "Sam-I-Am!" (with his signs), while Guy reads a newspaper in his armchair. Guy then develops a dislike for Sam because of Sam's actions.

One morning, Sam tries to offer Guy a breakfast food called green eggs and ham. But he, after seeing the dish, refuses by saying, "I do not like them Sam-I-Am. I do not like green eggs and ham."

Incredulous, Sam begins following Guy and asking him to eat that food in different locations and with different animals, including in a house, with a mouse, and in a box, with a fox, but is still rebuffed. Eventually, Sam, the mouse, and the fox give chase to Guy in a car, knocking him onto the car's hood and driving the car up to the top of a tree. As Guy continues to reject Sam’s offer, the car falls onto a passing passenger train with everyone in tow. Now stuck on top of one of the train's cars, Sam continues to ask Guy if he would eat them in a dark tunnel or in the rain. Later, Sam presents him with a goat hiding in the hood and the train suddenly goes off the rails and begins to plummet into the sky. After Guy yells "I do not like them here (a near place) or there (a far place). I do not like them ANYWHERE!" at Sam one final time, the train crashes into a boat, thus destroying and sinking it as everyone falls into the ocean.

Finally that afternoon, after everyone has fallen into the ocean and emerged out, Guy vainly accepts Sam’s offer and tries the green eggs and ham. When he tries it, he is so surprised to find that he does like them after all. As he eats the dish (offscreen), he happily announces that he is going to eat them in all the places and with all the animals that Sam just offered him. The story ends with Guy (who has eaten the entire dish) thanking Sam for letting him try the dish. All the characters return to shore, as Guy happily says, "I do so like green eggs and ham. Thank you! Thank you, Sam-I-am!." Finally, Guy thanks Sam for letting him try something new, and has learned that it is important to not be afraid when trying new things. Then, in return, he makes blue roast turkey and rye for Sam to try. Guy gives him a taste of the blue turkey, saying, "Try it. You'll like it. I have made it for you.", which presumes that Sam (after he chews and swallows) really likes it.

In the "The End" screen, Sam and Guy (now becoming friends) both say goodbye to the reader. Then, Guy asks, "Say, why don't we get something to eat?". and Sam replies, "I know just the place." As they both walk home to the setting sun, Guy (as he holds Sam's hand) tells Sam that it could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Then the words "The End" in a yellow serif text appears on the sunset.

Trivia[]

  • This game oddly uses the original Living Books logo from Dr. Seuss' ABC. In this logo, the book doesn't look down when the "A Random House/Broderbund Company" tagline appears– instead, the book looks upward with a shocked face and gets hit and crushed by a plate.
    • The music for the Living Books theme is also recomposed in this version unlike Dr. Seuss' ABC and The Cat in the Hat which still used the normal Living Books theme.
    • Also, the background is red, unlike Dr. Seuss's ABC, it was blue, also unlike The Cat in the Hat, it is purple but with the "Broderbund Software Inc." tagline.
  • When Guy recaps where he doesn't like green eggs and ham, pictures appear in place of the words.
  • This marks the second time The Cat in the Hat makes a cameo in a Living Books CD-ROM (The first time being Dr. Seuss' ABC during the letter "C" on page 3). (If you click on the box on page 17, he'll jump out of the box, take a bow, tip his hat, and walks off the screen. He then comes back, does a pose, then walks back off.) He later becomes the main character in the third Dr. Seuss Living Book.
  • This is the second Living Books video game to have a character say something other than "Welcome to Living Books!." In this video game, Sam-I-Am says "Welcome to Green Eggs and Ham!".
  • Page 12 is the only page and the only time overall in the game which allows the player to click in order to skip the reading. That is, if they want to go directly to the one minigame (Rhyming Game). This feature would later become the foundation in the later "Living Books" game D.W. the Picky Eater (the 18th and final "Living Books" game). (The said game D.W. the Picky Eater would allow the player to skip the reading work and the openings --including the "Living Books" logo and title screen.)
  • Like Ruff's Bone, Arthur's Computer Adventure, and D.W. the Picky Eater, this game uses a different credit sequence: It displays the game's animatic instead of the usual jazz animations, while using music from the Wizard, Painting, and Music credits animations that appeared in the previous two games.
    • This is also the only unique credit sequence that has Joey Edelman's jazz score used for the background music.
  • This Living Book doesn't feature any mini-games directly accessible from the menu, instead integrates small mini-games within the story, like The Cat in the Hat.
  • This demo version can be featured in The Berenstain Bears in the Dark, Stellaluna, and Arthur's Reading Race.
  • This is the first Living Book to use a new cover design.
  • This is the first Living Book in which the second page is used in the Living Books Samplers instead of the first page, as the first page has no text on it at all.
  • The Living Books Sampler demo for this game uses a still version of the title card, with the music cut down.
  • This is the first time to allow interaction with something besides the arrow to move on to the next page, but for only one page.
  • In the real "Living Books" version, the games are not directly available from the "Options" menu (Color Food Matching Game, Word Game in a Box, and Rhyming Game in the Sky). Instead, they are only accessed on pages 4, 5, and 12. In the "Dr. Seuss Preschool and Kindergarten Reading" version (which is on Disc 2 --named as "Printable Workbook and Interactive Storybook"), the games are available on the options menu.
  • On the "Quit" screen, if you click on "Yes" (after being given a "No" or "Yes" answer to the question said by Sam; "Are you sure you want to quit?"), you leave the book when Sam-I-Am says, "Okay, Bye! See ya!." However when you click on "No." you might want to keep playing when Sam-I-Am says "Okay." The mouse is the "No." while the fox is the "Yes."
  • The Pink Fried Chicken and Peas foreshadowed a scene from "The Doodlebops", when DeeDee turned her hamburger, pizza, and pineapple pink.
  • Like the other Dr. Seuss Living Books, this game was not planned to be re-released by Wanderful, as Oceanhouse Media already made their own version of the book– which doesn't use the Living Books version. Copies of the CD-Rom for the Living Books version can still be found on some auction sites including eBay.
    • Software MacKiev once re-released the Living Books version of this game as an app (with different graphics and/or buttons), but it has since been dropped from the App Store.
  • The Grouchy Guy's official name is "Guy(-Am-I)" in the Netflix series. Most other sources give his name as "Joey."
    • One of the Color Matching Game Foods (Purple Pancakes) was mentioned at the end of the Season Finale of Netflix's "Green Eggs and Ham." as Sam and Guy were looking over their Breakfast Menus.

Guy: (to Sam angrily) I DO NOT LIKE YOUR FOOD TODAY! SO, TAKE YOUR EGGS! AND GO AWAY!
(Guy angrily forces Sam to wrap up his green eggs and ham in a red bag. He furiously packs it up, puts it on a stick, and angrily makes Sam go away. Sam leaves in frustration and disappointment, only to come right back into the scene.)

__________________________________________________________________________________

(A pair of twin brother animals --a giraffe/dragon hybrid-- come out of the bushes when the user clicks on the bushes. Their names are "Would Not Giraffe" and "Would Too Giraffe". In other words, they are a "giraffe-like dragon". Would Not Giraffe turns to Sam and Guy and responds to them that he eats green eggs and ham, even though Guy does not like it.)
Would Not Giraffe: (to Sam and Guy) Well, but I eat green eggs and ham.
(Would Too Giraffe disagrees with Would Not, because he always eats anything.)
Would Too Giraffe: Nah! You eat anything!
(The giraffes start to argue. Even though Would Not does eat green eggs and ham, Would Too thinks that it is not true.)
Would Not Giraffe: Would not.
Would Too Giraffe: Would too.
Would Not Giraffe: (as they sink back into the bush) Would not!
Would Too Giraffe: Would too!
Would Not Giraffe: WOULD NOT!
(Both get down into the bushes)
Would Too Giraffe: (from in the bushes) Would too.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

(Sam gives Guy the option to eat the green eggs and ham either now or later if he is not going to eat them now. Guy turns to Sam who is trying to get him to try the dish --though another option which is "now or later"-- and glares at it. His look is hardly a look due to his annoyance and pretending that he does not see nor hear Sam.)
Sam-I-Am: Would you like them now...? (Takes out pocket watch) ...Or later?
(Guy angrily refuses both options. He does look at Sam and becomes more mad and annoyed. Then he tells Sam what he really is because he does not like green eggs and ham.)
Guy: (still not liking Sam's food) Sam, I am a green eggs hater!

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Sam-I-Am: (going over to him) Would you eat them on my hat?
Guy: I would not, could not, that is that.
(Guy angrily pushes Sam away.)

______________________________________________________________________________________________

(Guy looks at Sam's offer and glares at it, though it is hardly a look due to his annoyance.)
Sam-I-Am: You should try them.
(Sam takes a piece of ham from the green eggs and ham dish trying to give Guy a taste and tells him to take a taste.)
Sam-I-Am: Take a taste.
(Sam throws the ham from the dish into the trash can.)
Sam-I-Am: Or else these eggs will go to waste.
(Sam dumps it in the trash --after telling Guy that if he does not try them the eggs and ham are going to waste. Then the trash can eats the ham. Finding it delicious, the trash can licks his lips. Guy is still disgusted and turns his disgusted expression at Sam and turns back.)

________________________________________________________________________

(Guy's legs fall off him and make him shocked)
Guy: GAH!
(As Guy says that, he angrily pulls his legs back right up)

Food Coloring Matching Game[]

(From the start of the minigame.)
Sam-I-Am: (to Guy) If ham and eggs are not for you, I'll try to give you something new.
(By that, what Sam-I-Am means to Guy is that since he does not like green eggs and ham, he should have something new if they are not for him. It is true to Sam's thought. Guy does not like green eggs and ham. So if that dish is not for him, he --according to Sam-- should try something new. However, Guy doubts it.)
Mouse: Just find two things that are the same, and Sam-I-Am will say the name.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

(The fox and the mouse play "Go Fish." In the start of the game, both players --Fox and Mouse-- each hold seven cards.)

Mouse: Got any "11's"?
(Fox looks at his "number" cards. But he finds none of his cards being an "11.")
Fox: (he has no "11's") Nope. (says the real saying of the "Go Fish" game which is "Go fish" if another player doesn't have a match.) Go fish.
(Mouse fishes for a card from the deck of cards. After picking up a card, he gets four matches. Then a huge fish comes out as if Mouse had caught a fish.)

Woman: (sees Seymour bouncing up and down) Sweetheart, please. Sit in your chair.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Seymour: (points up to the car on top of the train) Why is there a car up there?
(Finding it unusual to see a real car on top of the train car, Seymour goes up to climb up to the top of the train car, trying to show his mother the car on top of the train's roof, but his mother puts him back inside.)
Woman: Hush! It's not polite to stare.

Sam-I-Am: Do you want them for a snack?
(After Sam asks this, he shoves the dish into Guy's face after asking him if he "would like to eat them for a snack".)
Guy: PACK UP YOUR EGGS AND TAKE THEM BACK!
(Losing his patience of Sam still on with his game, Guy angrily pushes Sam's dish back --after Sam asks him if he wants them for a snack-- hoping to see him pack up his food and take it back.)

(After Guy angrily pulls on the goat's beard, he twists his horns to make him look like a unicorn)

Goat: Green eggs and... (his horns untwist back to normal) ...ha-a-a-a-a-am.

Page 12/Rhyming Game[]

Sam-I-Am: Come on and play our rhyming game! Where you find words that sound the same! Just look at what we hold and quick. Go find the thing that rhymes and click.
Guy: I would not eat them in the sky. Not even if green eggs could fly!
Guy: I would not eat them with a goat. Not if it wore a rubber float!/Not even if it wore a coat!/Not even if it rowed a boat!
Guy: I would not, could not, on a train. I would not eat them in the rain!/Not if you tied it with a chain!/WHY CAN'T YOU GET THAT THROUGH YOUR BRAIN?!
Guy: I would not eat them in a tree. I will not eat them with a bee!/Not if you begged on bended knee!/SO GO BEFORE I COUNT TO THREE!
Guy: I would not eat them in a car. Not if you put them in a jar!/Not if you wish upon a star!/Not if the car were stuck in tar!
Guy: I will not eat them with a fox. Not if you put them a box!/I would not eat them with an ox!
Guy: I will not eat them with a mouse. I will not eat them in a house!/Not even if it wore a blouse!
Guy: I do not like green eggs and ham! Not smothered with raspberry jam!/Not even with a candied yam!/I do not like that Sam-I-Am!

(A fish tail appears)

Woman: Whoa!

(She tries to grab the fish tail, only to reveal that it is her mermaid tail skin, causing the kid to silently laugh. She dives into the water, splashing onto the kid, and emerges from the ocean)

Tall singer: Not on a boat!
Medium singer: Not with a goat!
Small singer: Not in the rain!

(the little singer wears a black hat)

All four: Not on a train!

Sam-I-Am: Try them! (moves in closer to Guy's face and he tries to duck from Sam) They are so delicious. (from underwater and in Guy's face) Eggs and ham are quite nutritious.
(As Guy tries to duck, Sam moves on even closer to his face, even in underwater. Guy angrily responds in an huge annoyance.)
Guy: (from underwater) Sam...?! Will you please...?! (furiously takes Sam's face out of his face, angrily --and in annoyance-- pushes him away fast, and then emerges out of the water with two fish on him) ...GO AWAY?!!?
(After Guy is out of the water.)
Guy: YOU'VE ASKED ME 20 TIMES TODAY!
(At that, Guy does this a trick to get Sam to step up his game.)

Page 15[]

Sam-I-Am: (about Guy trying the dish) Do you think he may take a bite? Will we have to wait all night?

Page 19[]

Woman: (with tears of happiness/tears of joy) I love happy endings. Don’t you?
(After she says this, she --tearfully and tears of happiness-- sniffs into her tissue.)

Guy: It's good to try out something new. And Sam, I learned that all from you!

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Sam-I-Am: I'm glad you liked my eggs and ham.
Guy: Thank you. Thank you, Sam-I-Am!

Page 19 (Next Page)[]

Guy: Thank you for letting me try something new. And now in return, here's something for you.
(It becomes blue roast turkey and rye.)
Sam-I-Am: (as he sees the blue turkey and rye on the plate.) Something blue. Something blue! That is something new!
Guy: (gives Sam a taste of the blue turkey) Try it. You'll like it. I made it for you.
(After Sam chews and swallows, it is revealed that he does like it when Guy gives Sam a taste of it.)

The End[]

Guy: Well, that's the end of our story. Say goodbye, Sam.
Sam-I-Am: (waving to the camera) Bye-bye.
Guy: Goodbye. (to Sam) Say, why don't we go get something to eat?
Sam-I-Am: I know just the place.
Guy: (walks along with Sam) You know, Sam? This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
(Then the words "The End" appear on the sunset)
